  1. recycle, volunteer to help clean up

  2. If you yourself are asking what you can do, there is a lot!

Try using rechargeable batteries because the non-rechargeable ones contain mercury or cadmium that can contaminate the environment when you throw them away. If you don't want to buy rechargeable ones, buy the regular alkaline ones and recycle them! The toxic stuff inside can be axtracted and reused then.

Alter your toilet and shower. You can install a toilet-dam on your toilet to save as much as 2 gallons per flush! For your shower, buy an aerated showerhead (mixes air with the water and is as strong as a regular showerhead) or an unaerated showerhead (pulses- it's like a massaging flow of water). Both of those showerheads use up about 50% less water.

Buy those flourescent light bulbs! They're more expensive, sure, but guess what? They last longer and use 1/4 the amount of energy a regular light bulb does. A normal incandescent bulb lasts 750 hours but a fluorescent bulb will give off the same amount of light, yet last for 7,500 to 10,000 hours. You save in the long run. :)

Carpool, walk, bike, rollerblade... do whatever you can to use less gas and reduce carbon dioxide pollution.

If you have to eat tuna, ALWAYS choose the brand that says "dolphin-safe" on the can somewhere.

You can use vinegar and water mixed together as a glass cleaner rather than using a much more toxic store-bought glass cleaner.

Try not to use paper cups, plates, and napkins. They come from trees.

Do your best to not dump paint, pesticides, fertilizers, oil, grease, anti-freeze, cleaners (try hot water and elbow grease instead of cleaners)- well I think you get the picture. Anyway, do your best not to dump those in your lawn or storm drains; those things go straight into rivers and lakes and sometimes the ocean, depending on where you live. A simple rule to remember is this: if you woudln't want to swim in it, don't dump it! Take it to a collection site and tell them what it is- the people there will take care of it.

In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has a slogan. "If you dump it, you drink it."

There is so much more, but those are a few things you can try.
