what happens if i download is to my PSP?

firmware is like if you have windows xp for you computer.you need it, to use your computer. you can update the psp firmware and you will have more things on your psp like internet radio,internet search,etc. look here for more info on how to install it

If you don't know what firmware is, how will you know if you downloaded it to the PSP?

Firmware doesn't work like that. It needs to be flashed to a ROM in the PSP and to do that you need a PROGRAM that contains the data or knows where a data file is located that it will flash to the ROM.
