I've been to Guatemala twice and the thing that I remember the most BESIDES the colorful Mayan culture, is all the volcanoes surrounding us everywhere we turned.  Also a fault line runs right through the middle of Guatemala running East to West.  So not only is Guatemala known for Volcanic activity, but it is also known for several historic earthquakes.

Guatemala is a great country.  It was a center and crossroad os the Mayan civilization and has amazing pre-Columbia ruins.  It has a rich colonial history, with lovely cities like Antigua.  It has pristine rain forests filled with amazing tropical birds and animals.  The colorful culture of the indigenous people makes for wonderful markets, crafts and local festivals.  The food is tasty, they make amazing rum and, yes , the coffee is world class.

I recommend a visit.

Was part of mexico until the 50's,won their Independence and now they wished they didn't since now they have to go thru mexico to come to the US and the mexicans are charging them an arm and a leg to cross thru mexico
