What is italian style tomatoes?

Question

a receipe I want to make calls for italian style tomatoes. I don't have canned so I wanted to make it fresh. Anyone know what spices to put in?

Italien-style tomatoes are Roma tomatoes. you can get them at a supermarket, but they would be listed as Roma tomatoes. Rome is the capitol city in Italy, so their tomatoes were named after them. for me, they are never in short supply, because i am Italien-Canadien

it's tomatoes usually with garlic, oregano, rosemary, and other spices, sometimes it tastes good, sometimes it tastes like old socks!

IF it tastes like old socks, ad some V8, some salt, and some onions, and you have a VERY good sauce!

Roma Tomatoes (Italian or Plum)

(Tomatoes - Roma)  This oval or pear shaped tomato goes by a variety of names: Roma, Italian and plum.  They have more pulp and less water content than the round varieties, thus they are better for cooking and making sauce.  We also enjoy them in our salads.  The best tasting tomatoes are those that are vine ripened.  Most commercial tomatoes sold in the markets are picked just at the point when they are beginning to turn red, and then they are ripened in transit being subjected to ethylene gas just prior to delivery - as a result they never have a chance to gain their full natural flavor.  Select tomatoes that are firm and free of bruises and wrinkles.

When you buy canned tomatoes... Italian-style canned tomatoes just mean that the tomatoes are cooked with Italian herbs and seasoning - usually basil, garlic, onions and oregano.

Not to be confused (which many answering this question seem to be) with canned Italian tomatoes which are imported canned tomatoes from Italy.

Edit... add onions, garlic, basil, oregano... the typical italian seasonings.

I think they're usually Roma tomatoes .... unless it's referring to seasonings that might be in the canned tomatoes
