  1. A belt extending from Equator (zero degrees latitude) to 10 degrees North and south latitude is called Doldrums.

    This is due to very low velocity wids blowing in this region.

    in days of sailing ships vessels traversing through this belt hardly made any headway and hence food and water shortages on board ships.

    hence the name doldrums.
