Leadership is living by example. People will follow you and do whatever you want them to if you never ask them to do something you wouldn't do yourself.

Respect must be earned. If you think respect is handed to you because you are in a "boss" position, you are wrong. Most people don't follow orders because they respect their boss, they follow orders because they need a pay check. And they will do as little as possible for that paycheck. If your boss is a true leader people will do what the boss asks not for the pay check, but because they want to please the boss. And they always give a little more, because the boss does as well - and by doing that he (or she) is leading by example.

Put even more simply, the leader is the inspiration and director of the action. He or she is the person in the group that possesses the combination of personality and skills that makes others want to follow his or her direction...

Leader figure is the person who makes a REAL influence.

S/He is the person who stays behind to make sure that everything is accomplished as planned. For that purpose, the "leader" gets himself out of the way.

It could be the sister of a supervisor--who day after day talks her brother into changing his company policy. She is the real power figure, but she is invisible. She exerts her influence in the form of suggestions.

It could be the indecisive boss's advisor who makes the real decision.

It could be the self-effacing wife of a strict father who is a real lead-er of the family.
