  1. I don't know whether Yahoo groups are doing something similar, but in Postal mail (snail mail) it means exchanging beautiful letters to which senders add rubberstamping, collages and more.

Also google for "mail art", the link below is from Germany, but the site uses the English language:

  2. Letterboxing started in England, but is now all over the world. It's basically like a secret treasure hunt for stamps that people have secretly created and hidden. You go to websites like the one I've listed to find clues, then when you follow them, you'll find a box with a handcarved stamp and logbook hidden inside. You can stamp the image into a journal or logbook of your own, then sign or stamp into the box's logbook with your own personal stamp to prove you've been there. There's lots of websites to find clues, but the main ones are Atlas Quest (http://www.atlasquest.com/) and Letterboxing North America (http://www.letterboxing.org/). The Yahoo groups are basically for people who do it in different regions and states to connect with each other.

The key with this hobby is stealth. The boxes are usually hidden in really neat places and in creative ways, so the normal passerby wouldn't spot them. Also, finders always have to be careful to rehide them and not draw attention to themselves as they do it so the boxes can stay around for a long time. It's a lot of fun!
