  1. 1 gallon water used per flush, per modern plumbing codes.

Older toilets were 3 gallons per flush.

  2. I bought an Eljer Titan which got a Consumer Reports top rating. Low flow toilets use several different methods to get good cleaning flow with 1.6 gallons of water.  The Titan has a tall tank and valves just the top half of the tank to get good pressure.  Others use a valve the adds line water pressure to blast the volume of water dropped by gravity and several other designs.

By the way, the Titan comes in a couple of dozen models for the rim various heights from the floor and the drain various distances from the wall.

Lots of toilets being sold today are 17" high at the rim, this greater height supposedly being more comfortable for getting off.   My wife and  I found it a pain to sit on and got the traditional 15" height version

  3. A low water volume flush toilet is now required by building codes.  These toilets are not the old kind where 2 flushes were required to clear the bowl.  These are highly efficient, and all makers produce them--the leaders are TOTO and KOHLER.  The flush with 1.6 liters per flush and TOTO has 1.2 liters per flush as well. They are quiet as well--no longer the "jet taking off" noise of old low volumn toilets as well.  Look at Kohler.com or toto.com for facts and some more info.

  4. Low flow toilets and water fixtures are designed to operate effectively with less water and some with less water pressure.  Some as low as 1.1 gallons per flush.  Others have dual flush capability.  A light flush and a heavy flush.  Certain areas are mandating low flush fixtures.  You can find them on retail sites like www.kitchenandpantry.com
