What kind of compositions are considered to be non-traditional literature?

My guess that it would be things to read that are not ordinarily in a course catalog or recommendation list.  Books by African and Arabic writers translated into English, works by feminist writers, poetry by Spanish or South American poets translated into English.  They don't necessarily have to be non-traditional subjects, just from a slightly different point of view because of culture or s*x.

Not every novel or poem that is written in a language other than English is non-traditional.  The Prince was written in Italian, but it is part of traditional literature because it is read in college classes.
