  1. The public selects representatives to govern for them.

In its most basic form, that the entire country rests in the hands of the individuals in the public/people and not in a specific group or person within that country.  The entire group of citizens elects whomever it wishes to lead it and that leader answers to that public.  Individual rights and ownership etc are paramount and a system of laws and regulations applies equally to all.

    In a democracy, by comparison, individual rights and property ownership mean nothing.  The "majority" is always right, no matter how it decides to judge in any specific case.  Laws and regulations are open to reinterpretation at any time on the whim of the majority.

  3. Republic comes from the Latin, "respublica", which literally means 'Public wealth', however in the U.S. government, Republican has come to represent an Upper Class which is very wealthy, at the expense of all the other classes.
