Slope is the weighted score of the average bogey golfer for a particular set of tees on a course. It is used to calculate the handicap differential for that course and set of tees. The rating is what a scratch golfer should score, hitting from a particular set of tees.

Slope is difficulty of the course taking into consideration, length, bunkering and location of bunkering, hazards other than bunkers, size and undulations on greens, narrowness of fairways, doglegs and carries over water. The higher the slope, the more difficult the course.
