social class is where you sand in society. for example, are you in the celebrity social class and hang out with donald trump and hold parties for only the a- listers who star in big films? or are you in that average social class where you work in a store for the money you need to live? or that snooty social class where all of your friends have fancy cars and dont lift a finger at home because they have a house keeper and nanny and their husband does the work at a high end cooperate office? from my sociology class a couple years ago, thats what I got out of what social class meant.

In a nutshell, it's unlikely that a labourer is going to be invited to a party at Paris Hilton's home. We basically associate with people who are like us; they have a similar type of work, similar income, church affiliation, level of education and so on. Even though we don't have a caste system such as India where members of another caste can't even walk on the same side of the street, North Americans have their own version of a caste system. Labourers don't like professionals and vice versa. Yet, at various times they need one another. A labourer may need to see a lawyer about a divorce, and the lawyer might need a plumber to fix his drain. Since labourers don't earn what lawyers earn, obviously they can't afford to live in the same neighbourhoods.

It's always been this way.
