  1. It's based on C. Wright Mills' book "The Sociological Imagination."  In a nutshell, it means to think about your own life in terms of culture and society as well as in terms of the place in time.  

    So, your views on immigration are shaped not by what you "know" from your own experience, but by society and by our place in history.  Immigrants have a chronically low status within our society, and get a bad rap from a lot of people.  Also, this is a time when few people are able to immigrate-- perhaps in another time or place, immigration was more acceptable (such as when the Puritans came to America?).
