Beta is basically the second phase of a testing process. When designed, it would go in to Alpha (many bugs, errors, so on). Once those are fixed and its more of a public release, it is called Beta. Beta is more of the live customer based testing on a wide scale - to find any additional mistakes.

Beta code is code that is complete and fully featured, but is still being tested for bugs.  Beta code is very likely to have bugs, crashes and issues.  The beta cycle is all about running code in as many scenarios/environments as possible to route out the bugs and finalize the code for release.

Beta is a type of program that is available but is not finished. Alpha is in Pre-Development and then there is the Release. Beta Programs can be beta for years, Like Planeshift. Alpha is where few people may have access to it or it can be where it is public but still has a ton of bugs.

When the game is at a point where it can be playable, then they usually have alpha testing, which is most of the time only tested by developers, since it will have too many bugs that people will get bored of playing.

When the game is nearly done, they need to make sure that the game has an infinitesimal amount of bugs, so they usually get a group of selected people, and then have them test the game and have them report any flaws in the game. Why do they only select so few people? Because this is a longer process, and they don&#039;t want people to play the game for free, most of the time. Plus, it will beat the purpose of the game being released at it&#039;s release date. This process known as &quot;closed-beta testing&quot;.

When the game is finally approaching release date, they will release the game out for free for a short amount of time, and this will draw attention to more people that couldn&#039;t get into closed beta testing. This is a faster way of finding flaws. This process known as &quot;open-beta testing&quot;.

Beta testing doesn&#039;t have to be just for games, it can be for any software as well.
