  1. Hurricanes commonly cause the water to go up.  It makes landfall and the storm surge is a real problem.  A lot of studies has been done as to why storm surges in hurricanes happen and the reasons they cause problems.  Snakes, flooding, wave damage, and loss of life are common with hurricanes.  The storm surge has a lot to do with this.  When the water goes up it moves into residential areas and causes damage to industrial sights.  The water goes up because the storm makes a giant sucking.

Sucking has a lot to do with pressure and the hurricanes have very low pressure in the middle, so it may seem surprising at first that hurricanes suck up water.  But the wind has a lot to do with it.  Hurricanes have a lot of wind.  This helps suck up water onto the beech.  The wind also makes waves which makes things worse.  Its because of this that bottom topography matters so much.

Public awareness can have a lot to do with storm surge.  If people are aware, the storm surge isn’t so bad.

  2. A storm surge is when the air pressure gets lower and the body of water rises which is a little similar to you sucking water through a straw.

  3. The storm surge is the water that is pushed up ahead of the right front quadrant of the tropical system (such as a hurricane).  It is created by the winds that basically blow the water along and ahead of them, in the same direction that the tropical system is moving.  Once it nears landfall, the water basically piles up along the shoreline, raising the water level above what it would  normally be.  Thus the stronger the winds, the more water can get piled up.

  4. The storm surge would be rise in the bay's water level.
