  1. An old and now seldom used antibiotic. It was the first of it's type. It has more side effects than more modern drugs, more interactions and has to be taken on an empty stomach. It also interacts with milk.

    It used to be used for acne, urine, genital and chest infection. It has been superseded by many newer generations of the drug group to which it belongs, The Tetracyclines. These include oxytetracyline, now also seldom used, minocycline and lymecycline, used mainly for acne and doxycycline whose current main use is as a malarial prophylaxis. All tetracycines have activity against 'atypical' organisms such as legionella, psitticosis, clamydia and mycoplasma.
