  1. Well, the most accepted form of physics accepted these days call elementary particles (photons, quarks, etc) "point particles" - that is; they have no volume or anything, just a location and properties such as spin.

String theory basically says that these particles aren't points, but rather something like tiny strings.  These can be opened or closed, and they say that it implies the existence of way more dimensions than we're used to, but that's not important.

As to whether it's real... that's a hard question to answer.  We're not sure if any modern physics is "real" - all that physics is is a way to describe what we see in nature.  String theory provides a better description than mainstream theory in some places, but in others the theory's still kinda incomplete.  So, time will tell if it turns out to really be useful.

  2. 11 dimensional string theory, (and 26 dimensional M theory), has not produced anything.

It is possible that the extra 7 dimensions of space in string theory, (that are not perceived), are mathematical deception that first appeared with 5 dimensional Kaluza-Klein Theory.

String theory is possibly deception involving adding dimensions of space to the already existing 3 dimensions of space one dimension at a time at 90 degree angles to the previous dimension.

That string theory is possibly invalid is stated at the end of the wikipedia article on string theory.

  3. Try this, too complicated to explain in YA!.

It is only theoretical and pretty hard to prove, but it does explain a lot of issues that were otherwise unanswerable.
