  1. I wouldn't get the dean. It's better to start on a four-string. Go for the Ellefson signature (the Peavey). I recommend a Ibanez, too.

The frets are the thin metal lines that go across the neck. When playing a note, you hold a finger between two of the frets. This changes the note, depending on what string/fret you're on.

  2. Frets are the thin metal lines on your guitar neck (which is why it's called a "fretboard") - you press the string down in between them to get the note you want =P

Dean: Dean basses look cool, but the quality & sound is bad (like B.C. Rich basses)

Peavey: This looks like a pretty good instrument. I've never played a Peavey, but heard they make some nice basses. The body is made of alder, so the tone should be pretty consistent - warm, but still enough mid and treble presence to round out the sound. Seymour Duncan pickups are pretty good. You won't be able to tailor your tone much with the bass's built-in preamp, since it only has one tone k**b, but you should be able to do that with a good bass amplifier too.

Rogue: Stay away from Rogues; yeah, they're cheap, but they're CHEAP. Poor quality materials, poor quality sound. Like Behringer bass amps =P

Hope that answers your questions; out of those 3, I'd say the Peavey is your best bet.
