its best to turn it off , the security is spam all by itself , i used to get free windows  security from mc afee ....20 times a day id get pop ups and alerts from them until i turned it off , now my computer runs faster

Each Antivirus has its ups and downs...

Look at http://www.av-comparatives.org/ for a good comparison.

Also remember that NO ONE Antivirus is going to catch ALL of the viruses! However, you cannot have more than one actually running on your machine without causing issues. There are plenty out there that run remotely via IE such as TrendMicro Housecalls to allow you to run another approach when you think you might have an issue.

My favorites are ESET NOD32 http://www.eset.com/

McAfree, TrendMicro and Symantec/Norton (especially if I am managing many computers).

For free Antivirus, AVG owns the market, but remember that you get what you pay for. AVG is NOT going to have the staff to throw at new signitures/definitions like Symantec/Norton, McAfee, or ESET.

What you need the most -

1) Updates definitions automatically

2) Solid Auto Protect features

3) Definitions are updated each night

4) Easy configuration for nightly scans

5) Ability to act as a HIDS (Host Intrusion Detection System)

Just know, you get what you pay for!!! If you pay for virus protection, your definitions are updated MUCH sooner than you do if you have one for free~

If you keep your system patched, log on as a user that cannot install software or make config changes (restricted user vice administrator), keep your software updated, stay away from P2P software, and stop trying to view "free" p**n, you will generally keep yourself immune on ANY system!

Great question on a very important subject. I have AVG 8.0 and love it. It has all the different protections you need in one. If you do a Google on this subject, you will find lots of reviews.
