What is the difference between a diplomat and an ambassador? And what is the name of the job that is in the u.n. where you help make the major decisions of the world?

At an embassy (either nation-to-nation or UN), the head is called the ambassador.  

Anyone who works in international relations is a diplomat.  

The head of the UN is the secretary-general.
