jeni could possibly derive from the name of an Easterner because this compares with gn (assuming g corresponded to gama pronunciation of Greek) meaning "garden" (as garden of Eden) which was in the East.

I am basically relating 'jeni' to 'genesis' which is Greek, note the 1001 Nights was written after Greek was wide influence in the M.E.

Off hand I do not know the Arabic spelling, but it is probably by the letter Jim.

Any way the meaning "devil" or "sprit" is ascribed in Arabic, this is where the word appears, but it may come from Persian, though Persian has borrowed words from Arabic.
