my asian friend equi works in a sweat shop for 2p a day

and a day consists of 33 hours

she has to stop time to get in the extra hours to feed her rather large asian family

The federal minimum is $6.65 but your state may have a higher minimum.  See my link for information on each state.

Labor laws are mostly state laws.  Some states would restrict the type of work and the number of hours and time of day that you, as a 17 year old, can work.

age does not matter.  whether it is manual labor or white collar work, it does not matter.

However it varies from state to state due to state laws. For example in Massachusetts and California it is $8.

March 6 2008 - The Government has announced that the adult minimum wage rate will rise from £5.52 to £5.73 an hour in October. The youth rate for those aged 18 to 21 will be increased from £4.60 to £4.77. The Government has also said that the rate for workers aged 16-17 years should increase from £3.40 to £3.53.

What are the current rates of the national minimum wage?

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1st October 2007 are:

£5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older

A development rate of £4.60 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive

£3.40 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age.
