If you mean Assyrians, as in the ethnic group ("Syria" comes from a greek word which was the shortened form of "Assyria"), then they are believed to be descendants of the ancient Assyrians and the Assyrian Empire.  The ancient Assyrians, in turn, trace their history back to the ancient Akkadians, originally from the city of Akkad, believed to be situated on the Euphrates River (but we have not yet actually found where exactly on the River it was).  This was approx. the 24th century B.C.

    So.... Syrians, if I am correct in believing you are referring to Assyrians, trace themselves back pretty much to the dawn of complex society/civilization.
