I have a pancake recipe that calls for wheat germ, I don't know what it is and I don't have any.

What is it? Can it be substituted?

  1. I am a former chef and use it alot and yes it can be substituted for, essentially it is the outer coating of the bran on a wheat kernal, it is high in fibre and nutrients and is good for you, I have used it for years in alot of things including meatloafs and veggie faux meat meals, but you can use a bit of plain old oatmeal just pulse it a few times in a food processor, of chop it with a knife to make it smaller, just adds a bit of extra fibre to the pancakes or other dishes and food product.

  3. You can leave out the wheat germ, but you would have to add more flour to make up for leaving out the wheat germ.
