It what is commonly referred to as a nerve pill.  It is a benzodiazepine that is used to take the edge off and help relieve anxiety.  Doctors use to prescribe it like crazy to housewives and the like, until they found out how addictive the stuff is.  It is now a widely abused street drug as well.  It will relax you (almost like a very dull/weak cannabis high) for about two to three hours.

EDIT:  Do not listen to the answer above.  A benzo is NOT a painkiller.  Ive never noticed such an effect from using it either.
