What kind of car to get?

My husband and I are expecting our first child (yay!). At the moment we have a Honda Civic hatchback, which we think would be difficult for getting car seats in and out etc, not to mention fitting in a pram/baby bag and whatever else we'll need to take everytime we go out! So we want to upgrade. What kind of car do you find works well with babies/children and getting in all the gear you have to take with them? We're looking at spending approx NZ$5000 (that's about US$3500).

Minivan, or to be more fancy pants get a cadilac escalde.

Basically a smaller 4 door car would be your best bet.  Something like a Mazda 3, or a Toyota Corolla would be decent.  $3500 isn't a lot of money for a car, so you'd have to find something used, but you also want it reliable.

If the car is in good running order I would keep it and save up more money for a better car like a that Toyota hybrid.  I had a KIA Sophia and was able to fit everything in it.  I only upgraded to a van when I got pregnant with twins.  I would do a test run first and you maybe surprised at how well it all fits.  My husband had a Chevy Cavalier and it all fit in his car great too. Just test it by putting a car seat, diaper bag, and stroller in.

Well obviously you are going to have to get a used car. I had this problem too. My husband has a Ford ZX2 which can barely fit anything in the back seat. I spent a little over a thousand dollars and got a used Ford Taurus. It fits the carseat and everything very nicely. It has a good sized backseat and still fits two people back there with the carseat in. And it's not too hard to drive either. I was worried about that since I was only used to driving small cars. It's not the best on gas, but it's reliable if you look around and get a good one and fits everything well.
