My husband's mother has a first cousin whose daughter (we'll call her Christine) has 3 kids. How are Christine's kids related to mine? I thought it was 3rd cousins but my mil thinks 2nd cousins twice removed. BTW, what does "twice removed" mean?

  1. This is cool.  I found a "chart" in a book that I have.

I have created a document that you can view at this web page - -

P.S.  Oh.  You need to sign up for a Google account.  It is free.  (Just click on the "Create an account now" link.  It is easy.)

P.S.  According to this chart - - Your kid's and Christine's kids are "third cousins".  Note - Your mother-in-law (box #3 across the top) and her cousin (box #3 along the side) are "first cousins".  Your husband (box #4 across the top) and Christine (box #4 along the side) are "second cousins".

  2. Okay.  Your mothers cousin's daughter is your husbands second cousins.  So, one more generation down makes them to your kids third cousins.  You husband is to them second cousin once removed.

Edit.  I get a thumbs down, Deb a thumbs up and the same answer by both.  Sigh.

  3. I find these are easier when I "line" them out. In the lines below the first person is the child of the first person in the line above, and the second person is the child of the second person in the line above. I gave names to everyone.

    Albert & Alice = siblings

    Betty & Bernice = 1st cousins

    Carl & Christine = 2nd cousins

    Donna & David = 3rd cousins

    Edward & Elizabeth = 4th cousins

("Betty" is your husband's mother and "Carl" is your husband.)

"David" has two siblings, you said. Your children are "Donna" and her siblings.

Twice removed means a cousin is up or down two levels. Betty and Bernice are 1st cousins. Chistine and Betty are first cousins once removed. David and Betty are first cousins twice removed.

I added your future grandson, Edward, and his future fourth cousin, Elizabeth, so you could see a second cousin twice removed. The "E" children are two levels down from your husband and his second cousin. The "E"'s are second cousins twice removed to Carl and Christine.

  4. They are 3rd cousins definatley and once or twiced removed refers to the generations between them...so your first cousins children are your first cousins once removed....and your first cousins grandchildren are your first cousins twice removed ect...
