What major should I take if...?

Question

So, as a career, I wanted to be the kind of scientist that makes vaccines, and such. You know, the scientist/chemist that tries to make the world a better place.

I might even be able to cure cancer! Yeah, those kinds of scientists.

I honestly don't even know the actual title of those scientists. XD

I was thinking Biochemists, but I'm not sure.

So, I was wondering, if that's what I want to study to be when I get to college (which will be within the next 2 years), what major should I take? Again, I do NOT know the name of the actual job... but this is what I want to do.

Please help! It'll make my junior year a little more easier.

biochemistry is a great start if you would like to work in pharmaceuticals developing drugs to save lives.  keep in mind you will need AT LEAST a masters degree to do anything important in the sciences. You could also study medicine or Biology.  Any one of these could be a great foundation, as your graduate work wouldn't necessarily be in what you get your BS in.

Consider biochemisty.  That should be right up your alley.  What I would suggest you do is eaither talk to your career counselor at school, or just research on-line different university science programs and see what their descriptions are of their chemisty and/or biology departments are.  Just load up on math and science... that is what you will need most to pursue a career in the science or medical field

I agree with the idea of majoring in biochemistry. It sounds like you'll want to consider medical school post college graduation. Many doctors spend their careers researching exactly what you are talking about. If not that, then a you'll need a phd for sure.

You want to be a Vaccinologist.  That would be an advanced degree in Microbiology.

look in to majoring in genetic engineering. you can probably also major in chemistry and minor in biology or something like that. look into schools that have the biochemistry major also!
