What makes a car hybrid?

How is different from a normal car?

A hybrid car has a liquid-fuelled piston engine and also a battery driven electric motor. The piston engine is normally used on long high speed runs and the electric drive for use in town where the speed is low, braking is more frequent (and may be when the motor acts as a dynamo, recharging the battery thereby saving energy) and engine idling is for a greater proportion of the journey time.

The piston engine can also be used to charge up the battery. Overall there is a fuel saving together with reduced exhaust emisions (because of the greater propulsive efficiency of the fuel use at higher average speeds) but it is at the cost of extra weight and greater basic vehicle price.

Using more than one type of energy source to power the car.

Example the toyota prius uses an Atkinson cycle gasoline engine combined with electric motors to achieve better gas mileage.

Doesn't matter the combination if there is more than one power source to drive the car, is a hybrid.
