  1. By surf suit I assume you are talking about a wet suit.  Everyone is different, I can go in the winter with just a long sleeve rash guard and be pretty cool.  While others in the summer can't trunk it (go in just their bathing suits) and need to wear a wet suit.  Some people adapt to the cold more then others.

  2. I dont wear one. I know plenty of people who do though.

if you want to know, i just wear my bikini and im good to go. But if you surf, you must make sure to wax your board so it stays sticky and good for your feet to balance on the board otherwise u could have a big wipeout in the waters and fall

surfers decide wheather to wear a wet suit when its probably cold outside [weather] or the waters could be cold or they just want to wear it. Their own decision

surfing very dangerous...did it for 9 years

  3. The weather, and the temperature in and out of the water

  4. If the water temp. is below a certain temp, you have to wear a wetsuit should you stay in the water an extended period of time.  In San Francisco, our water temp ranges from 50-60 degrees during the year.  Thus, we wear wetsuits year round.  Its rare around here that the water actually warm up to a level where you can wear boardshorts (or bikinis for the ladies).

In warmer climates, where the water is 70 degrees+, you might choose to wear a full wetsuit, spring suit or neoprene jacket if the winds are stronger or the like.  Basically, if you get a chill out surfing, neoprene is a good barrier to keep you warm.  A simple rash guard can help too.

So, all in all, its just a matter of how cold your body is versus the water temp and other weather conditions.  If you've got a bit more "meat on your bones", you can go without longer.  If you tend to get cold easy, you likely would need something to keep you warm = hence a wetsuit or other neoprene related item........

  5. I use a scaling system, Air Temp + Water Temp.

    > 130 , I will usually trunk it.

    110 - 130, spring suit

    90 - 110, full suit

< 90, I might break out the dry suit

Now that I'm older, why be cold if you don't have to be.  Now that I have a dry suit, no day is too cold.
