Tectonics plates...like the ring of fire....where instability is always present.

PLate techtonics.  Plates are constantly moving.  There's too much pressure built up and they slip pass each other.

movement of the earths tectonic plates.  the plates are the surface of the earths crust that float basically on a magma, or liquid center.  the edges of two plates rub together and create friction, until energy is released and the plates move suddenly.  This isn't the case in ALL earthquakes, as the worst earthquake in recorded history in north america took place near memphis in the middle of a plate on the new madrid fault, a crack in a plate, not the traditional edges of two meeting plates.

the earth is not just one giant piece of rock, it has layers (yes like onions). these expand and contract according to weather. but they also randomly decide to move. there are 3 different ways they can move, but i cant be bothered listing them here.

There are a lot of things that can cause it. Plate tectonics is a THEORY that can't be proven! However, that is one thing that is said to be a cause.

But the biggest cause is a fault. That is a section of the earth's crust (Top layer) broken into Two sections. They are pushing in opposite directions. Neither section gives in and they continue to push against each other.

That causes the Earth to shake violently.

The earth's crust is made up of different plates that all sit together, and the plates are moving all the time (thats why over time countries have changed into different places on the earth) and when these plates collide, it causes an earthquake.
