their win proved you don't need big name stars to win you only need a bunch of players who know their capabilities and their game they know where they scores runs and are able to execute it

good captaincy is very important Shane Warne was so good with his players he motivated them and treated them so well they listened to him and wanted to perform for him

RR was the only team to go with a foreign skipper and it worked for them but i think Dhoni was also a cool and calm captain who gives his players confidence from the other indian captains i dont think they were very good at all

Playing as an unit is much important than anything.

Before the start of the tournament, the star value of Royals may have been low, but then they had many biggies join them (like Graeme Smith). They were a balanced unit. Quality all-rounders tailor-made for 20-20 style of cricket.

Thinking bowlers, who bowled wicket-to-wicket, at an impeccably incisive line and length, making batsmen to culture their shots.

Captaincy was key when it comes to close finishes. Warne has the experience, he has played all forms of cricket (he has played 20-20 in English county cricket) and moreover he was the coach for the team, and hence he should know his players.

Low key players (like Asnodkar) had nothing to lose, they went out and played their heart out.

Star value could become a burden as the spectators expect them to perform, and they go circumspect and in the end falter in impressing the viewers (best example - Sachin Tendulkar)

Captain, let him be native or foreign, has to have a cool head, and think positively.. I don't think, Dhoni did anything wrong, and you  can't take away anything from Super Kings, they took the match to the last ball (If only, Raina could hold onto Yousuf Pathan's catch, result could have been something else)

To conclude, performance when it matters, counts, star value  does not. (After all star value is the product of consistent performance in the past).

good captaincy is no good if you don't have good players to execute your plans.

Skippers, Indian or Foreign, is judged on the collective performance of the team.

A good team with eleven players is better than a team of eleven good players.
