This may be a dumb question but I was watching the Cheltenham Gold Cup yesterday and wondering if all the race horses are male, or can they be females too?

  1. Yes females race too.  Some races are restricted to males only and some races are restricted to females only and then there are races that that males and females race in together.

  2. Both sexes race.  One correction I would like to add.  Yes, the Kentucky Oaks is strictly for fillies, however, a filly may run in the Derby.

Wedo remember that last year the Belmont was won a a filly, the great Rags to Riches.

  3. Some races are for fillies only (such as the Oaks), some for males only (such as the Derby).  Some are mixed.  It depends on the rules for the race.  Each is different.

They are also restricted on the age of the horse,  the Gold Cup is for horses 5 years old and older.  Horses start racing as two year olds.

  4. The are both sexes but some of the males are "done" there are also races for filly's only

  5. they can be Males, Females or Geldings

  6. Hi..

At Chelteham there were Geldings (casterated male horses) Mares (female horses over 4) fillies (female horses under four) and at this years cheltenham there was an entire (Stallion). He was running in a hurdle race.

Alderbrook was a horse that won the cheltenham champion hurdle one year - he was an entire!

    Hope this helps.

  7. They can be Male or Female, Males run harder and faster so are generally the 'race horses'.

  8. Colts and fillies  some races are for both  . Oyhers are restricted to same s*x

  9. Both can be raced. Have you ever seen the movie Dreamer? That is a female horse. The movie is based on a true story. Mostly only females race in the Breeders Cup.
