Question:

What subs do you recommend?

I'm upgrading my speakers to Kicker KS Components and Kicker KS Three-ways powered by the ZX350.4 in my Chevy Cobalt, and I want a sub(s) to fill out the sound and improve the overall quality. I don't want to be that guy you can hear from two blocks away. I listen to all kinds of music, but mainly metal and hip hop. I'd prefer to get one sub to conserve trunk space and was looking into Kicker CompVR's? So I guess really what I'm asking is would you get a 10" or 12" based on my needs of filling out the sound and overall quality and my musical preference. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

  1. Take a look at JL Audio subs, a bit expensive but well worth the money.  with these subs all you need is one 12" or 10" sub to get all the frequencies that no one sub can get, trust me. i used to have kickers, pioneers(premiers), alpine, and even MTX but the only time i got the same sound quality as just one of these subs is when i had my premiers which were two 10" and a 13". with JL Audio, you can conserve a lot of space still get an awesome sound.

  2. Not a Huge fan personally of the comp vr's.  I'd suggest something like Fi Car Audio Q series Sub.  Sound is incredible.  And the bass is loud enuff.  12" would give you a deeper bass, 10" would give you better response (sometimes....of course it all depends on the subwoofer. brand make model...) etc.  Image Dynamics makes a decent Q series woofer as well.

Also might look into RE audio SX series woofers as well.

Also they are not the normal speakers you find elsewhere.  So you will also stand out amongst your peers! :)

    Edited:

I agree that JL subs are pretty decent.  However bang for the buck....(I've owned a 12w7 and 12w6v2 both excellent subs) But I paid a pretty penny for both of those, and not even retail prices...(EBAY PRICES) this was before I found RE Audio And Fi Car Audio.

The Fi Car Audio BTL is one Amazing sub...Hit Harder and Louder than the w7.  w6v2 is not nearly as strong as the w7.

My friend has two Fi Q Subs, and they hit louder than my single BTL...But its Sound Quality is MUCH Better than the w7.  The W7 is known for it's Sound Quality as well as deep bass.

So If you want the best of both worlds, I'd get the Fi Q.

Read the last message and a couple messages up:

Also from my experience....the bang for the dollar the 12W7 is a retail $750 sub.  The Fi BTL 12" FULLYYY LOADED with the best addons is under $500.  The Fi Q  12" is around $259...

Plus the W7 is a 3ohm subwoofer....not many amps match up to it well.

  3. Kinda odd music choices... ;)

A 12in will be able to produce the lower bass notes commonly used in hip-hop beats.  But, a 10in will be better for the drum rhythms in metal.  I'd say go with a 10in CVR in a vented box pushed by the ZX400.1.  That way you'll get the tight bass for rock music, but it will still go deep enough and feel boomy enough for hip-hop.

(Kinda different Kicker sub, but whatever) I have the 10in L5 truck box in my BMW and it still hits for hip-hop, but the bass is very tight when I switch over to rock.

  4. i recommend jl audio 12"s
