I am looking for a new board and have,up until now, been surfing simply on anything i could find/hire/borrow. Although i have some idea from experience, i am still not too confident about the size of board i should be getting.

Here are my specs (so to speak):

- intermediate at surfing,

- around 88kgs or 195 Pounds or 14 stone

- around 6ft/183cm

I would like to know the type of board (im thinking short board), and range of heights/widths/thicknesses that would be ideal for a surfer of my size and stature.

Thanks a load!

  1. here are some good boards Quiksilver,Roxy,Billibong,Rip Curl.

  2. What the first person said is correct. That is if you have your heart set on a shortboard.

My experience says that maybe you should look into getting a mini- tanker.

  3. You should look into a retro fish surfboard around 6'6-6'8 with a width around 21-22.  these boards are perfect for a person looking to move down to a shortboard.  You can go alittle shorter if you are ready for a challenge and willing to work with the board.  Here is a board that is absolutwly incredible, that i am buying on ebay when it sells again in 10 days.  You can check it out if you want.  If you want to buy one, don't worry, they are selling more than one. http://cgi.ebay.com/65-NEW-EPOXY-Big-Guy...

  4. 6'6" ronded squash tail with 2 3/4 inch rails, approximately 20 - 22 inches across.

  5. I managed a surf shop for 2 years and have sold well over 1000 boards to people just like yourself. I would say a nice Pig Fish, it has the thickness to give you enough float as well as you being able to throw it around once you get more comfortable on it. Do not go with anything over 3 inches over your height if you really want to cut into the wave a pig fish will still allow you to cut the tops off of waves and get nice air if you have a good area with nice sections on your break at your beach. A lot about the board will have to do with what type of surf size you have or are planning to surf.

  6. There's a board that has three fins, called a Thruster board, not to big, not too small, it would be just perfect for you.

  7. I've been surfing for a number of years and have ridden both short and long boards in Hawaii (Oahu).

If you are seriously considering on going with a short board these are some of the criteria I would follow.

    1. Because of your height I would go with a board shorter than 6'6". It'll make the paddle that much more difficult and your weight would be better sustained.

    2. I would recommend a squash tail over a pin tail simple because the control factor is better, not to mistake it for agility.

    3. Perhaps a 22' - 24" width X 2 2/3 rail board with tri fins. Based on your physique, this may be a good spec. But you should always ask the surf shop for opinions as well.

I am about your built and weigh a little less but I ride a 6'6" gun from Blue Hawaii Surf http://www.bluehawaiisurf.com/homepage07... I can ride this board during the big summer swells on the south shore and can take it up to the west and north shore when the surf is around 8'-10'

Some other surfers may suggest shorter boards but it all depends on the day you use it. If the surf is a decent size you'll want something a little bigger. If you are really into hot doggin than something a little shorter would make better sense.

    Hope this helps.

    Aloha.

  8. I'm 6'2" 200 lbs. I have a Bruce Jones Fresh Fish 6'2" by 22" by 2 7/5" along with a short board. I can ride the fish on almost nothing.  I think that unless you have overhead everyday you should have a fish in your line up...
