Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis ("idiopathic" means "of unknown cause") is the most common type and appears after the age of 10. Girls are more likely than boys to have this type of scoliosis. Scoliosis can run in families so a child who has a relative with idiopathic scoliosis should be checked regularly.

Less common causes....

With functional scoliosis, the spine is normal, but an abnormal curve develops because of a problem somewhere else (i.e. one leg being shorter than the other or muscle spasms).

With neuromuscular scoliosis, there is a problem when the bones of the spine either fail to form completely or they fail to separate from each other.
