What to buy a new dad?

Question

My neighbours are due their first baby in 3 weeks time. I've know the mum for 12 years now shes 23 a couple of years younger than me. When I had my son almost 6 years ago now (sob) Everyone bought him cute clothes and a couple of people got me a nice moisture soak for the bath etc. But nothing for dad. I really don't want to leave dad out...any ideas as to what I can get him?!!

Something that u can engrave his childs name and date of birth on.

It's not really baby-oriented, but how about putting together a "Daddy Does Dinner" kit.  

A wicker basket (which the can reuse) containing a box of spaghetti, some canned meat sauce, a shaker of cheese, something chocolatey for dessert, and a couple coupons for free movie rentals at their favorite place.

It would be a nice break for them - while she's busy with baby and tired, he can make dinner, and they can have a quiet evening while baby sleeps.  Give them a year, and those quiet evenings won't be happening quite as often!

coffee and Starbucks espresso! he's gonna need it. You can also get him some man-ish looking baby accessories so that he isn't carrying a pink or bright yellow baby bag when he takes the baby out. make it black or tan or even gray

How about a novelty gifts, for example:

Ear plugs (tell him he will apprecialte them!)

pipe and slippers (as a sign of getting old!)

a board game (he will freak out when you tell him he can wave goodbye to his social life)

You may also want to include something 'proper', that is more than a joke, such as a cheque!

**But seriously, buy him something that will allow him to "get away" for a while. He's going to be having overwhelming feelings of responsibility and stress do to the amount of time needed to be spent with the newborn, and anything that can take his mind off that would be a great gift.
