Question:

What to do with baby birds?

These two little baby birds feel from the nest in my yard. I have been watching from afar and for a while the mother bird was tending to one baby., but then she stopped. She hasn't come back to the babys for over 30 minutes. The babys are far to small to fly. I think they are sparrows. Should I get the babys or leave them? Will the mother bird come back?

  1. just leave them alone

  2. Put them up in the tree, on a branch and watch them from there. If there is any danger close by the mother will not go to the babies because that will draw attention to them. Look around and see if the parents are sitting on a roof just waiting for the way to be clear. If you don't see any sign in a  couple of hours then you may have to help out.

  3. I would take them in, and then put a heating pad under them to keep them warm. Don't make it too hot, though. Go to a pet store and get some baby bird feed. I am pretty sure that you have to feed them something like every two hours.

  4. i suggest you leave them alone, the mother will come back.

  5. Sounds like you did the correct thing..this is the advice I usually give for anyone finding a baby bird:

If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own if it is any other sparrow besides a House Sparrow. Look for a rehab here:
