Question:

What to do with this situation?

I recently got my financial aid report back from my school for next fall and spring. The problem is that they gave me a scholarship and grant that require me to have a 3.0 GPA. I took very difficult classes this semester so my cumulative GPA will probably drop to slightly below 3.0. So what are my options, once I find out in fact that I am below 3.0 will the financial aid office offer me more federal unsubsidized and subsided loans? Or will they just tell me tough luck. I just wonder what the report would give for options if someone was in the same financial position as me and already had a gpa of less than 3.0 from past semesters.

  1. Your school should be flexible and be able to provide other options in such a case.

Your advisor should work with you with but may put you on "academic probation for aide" to adhere to the funding source requirements.

  2. Talk to your financial aid office to find out all the requirements and consequences.  If your GPA falls below the required limit try and see if you can appeal any decision to take away aid, and maybe give you a probation period, or only lose a portion of the grant until you can make up the grades.  They may not agree, but it does not hurt to try.

IF you lose the grant/scholarships then you will likely need to pay out of pocket or take out loans to make up the difference that was paid previously.
