Im from south Texas so I dont see snow very often, so when I heard that my high school band is going on a trip to a ski resort in Colorado I was estatic! One Problem, i have no idea what to wear. Also, would the resort provide the gear (boards ect..) or would i have to buy it myself? how much would a board cost? I know I sound like a total noob but i really do not have a clue.

  1. yeah the resort would have rentals for snowboards. what u should wear is just a long sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt, and beanie. that should keep u warm cuz snowboarding takes a lot out of u. lots of falling and sweating so that should be enough. good luk on ur band trip.

  2. On the slopes, you'll need gloves, jacket, snow pants and some thick socks. Seeing as how you're from Texas, I doubt you are subjected to cold weather alot so you might also want to bring some long johns too just in case.

As for your "outer layer" of clothing, they HAVE to be waterproof, not water resistant. You'll most likely fall a lot so water resistant clothes will eventually get wet, this making your day quite irritating. Make sure your gloves, jacket and pants are waterproof and you should be okay.

Nearly all ski resorts have rentals so you won't need to worry about your gear. Whether you're going to snowboard or ski, either the ski resort itself or shops nearby will have stuff for rental. You can also rent helmets too at the shops. snowboard.ski rentals can range really depending on the resort. Usually though, for boots and board/skis, you can expect to pay around 40-90 dollars. Lots of resorts will have noob rentals as well as advanced rentals where you can get the higher grade gear. I think you should be okay with just the noob gear so you should be okay. Snowboard rentals, for some reason, usually are cheaper than skis so, at worst, expect to dish out about 60-75 bucks for rentals. If you're staying out there for awhile, i.e a couple of days, they'll also usually have some sort of deal for long term rentals as well.

Also, although you may not want to, you may want to bring some wrist guards and padding for your backside. If you intend on boarding and are a newbie, expect your keister to be well abused after your first day of riding.

  3. Since this is your first time you want to bring lots of clothes to change in and out of because you will fall a lot and get wet. You are going to want to wear snow pants and a heavy jacket but bring a sweatshirt there because sometimes you can get really hot and then you can out your sweatshirt on. Also you might want to wear snowboarding goggles to block the snow from hitting your eyes and a neck warmer or a bandanna will do the trick. You can rent your gear there and bring tall thick socks to wear under your boots so you don't get blisters or cold feet. Oh and i wouldn't buy a board because they are pretty spendy but if you are going to get a board go with Burton (that's just my opinion).

  4. Warm and waterproof clothes, in layers.  There are three basic layers:

inner - long underwear on top & bottom and good (tall) socks.

mid - warmth wear.  Fleece or wool are ideal.

outer - wind and waterproof jacket and pants.

Don't wear sweats or jeans.  They will get wet from falling and snow and then they are heavy and cold and will make you miserable.  Wear fleece, polyester, wool, whatever you can find.  I can't stress this one enough, being wet will ruin your day/trip.

Usually resorts will have pants/jackets/helmets/goggles/gloves you can rent along with the board/boots/bindings.  If you know what resort you're going to then look them up online, it'll usually say what they rent online.  If they don't rent something then start talking to friends and family to see if you know anyone who can hook you up.

Don't carry anything in your pockets that could break or isn't necessary (like a cellphone or ipod or camera), you'll spend so much time on your butt that it won't be too useful and breaking it'd suck.

    Have fun!

  5. First you will need a heavy winter jacket. You can probably rent one at the resort. Next you will need a helmet. You can rent one of these at the resort. You will also need a hat and gloves, the resort probably wont have these to rent, but they might you never know. I snowboard all the time because I'm from Maine.

What resort is it? I might have been there before for your answers.

  6. Well, if you're not planning on boarding on a regular basis, buying dedicated snowboard clothing from head to toe is overkill.  It's not cheap.

The best thing to do what make do with what you have.  For your top, I would suggest a tee or long sleeve shirt, put a hoodie on top, and some sort of nylon jacket or windbreaker for your outer layer.

For the bottom... i would wear a pair of sweats... and some kinda nylon gym pants on top if u have it.  DON'T wear jeans.  You'll be wet and miserable.

Wear a pair of sunglasses, the snow will be very very bright... and a beanie or hat.  Most of your body heat escapes through your head.  Don't forget strong sunscreen or you'll get burned.

The resort will have a shop where you can rent boots and boards (~$30  a day).

    Have fun!!  Hope that helps.
