I just got hired on as a hostess for a fairly nice restaurant in my town. Give me ideas of what makes a good hostess, or maybe even what are "No-No's" of hostessing?

  1. Dress nicely, be polite, and make everyone feel like they're top priority.  Look everyone directly in the eye and always have a smile.

Good luck with the new job!

  2. make every body feel special ,without getting syrupy .and of course u are already impeccably dressed and groomed .

good luck ,enjoy ur new job .

  3. Be sure to use good manners -- say "thank you" and "please".

Don't act like you are so busy you don't have time to listen to the customers questions or to take their names for the waiting list.

If you are taking reservations or making a waiting list, be sure to ask them to spell their names if you aren't sure what they said.  I've given up on giving any hostess my last name because they never spell it correctly so when they do call our name, we aren't sure what they are saying because they can't pronounce it.  But it also doesn't hurt to ask for a last initial.  We were waiting one night and one guy's name was Gary.  The hostess kept calling similar sounding names, like Larry and Barry and Mary (she spent like 10 min. looking for a Mary) and poor Gary had to keep going up to see if it was him.

  4. Look people in the eye and smile when you greet them.
