Whats all the hype about Crosby?

Question

im sick of hearing about him......i know his team is doing well in the playoffs or were until they met detroit but is it only because hes 20 years old?

thomas vanek of the buffalo sabres has scored more goals in his 3 year career than crosby has in his 3 years and im sure some of you have never even heard of him. and yes sid has quite a few assists tallied on his career but that only means that he has good teammates.

why all the hype?

He's really good, so deserves any praise he gets, and he Really Showed Up last night, helping to make this series one to remember.

Because he's really that good (no detriment to Ovie, Vanek, Kane, Toews, or anyone else building the future for hockey), and because he's sweet looking ( and probably because he's Canadian), he gets the dubious honour of being the Face of the NHL.  I know he's used to being swarmed, but I just wonder how much better he'd be if they just left him alone and let him play without the distractions?

Like you, however, I am rather tired of the commentators going on and on about Sid and his Penguins.  If they don't win the Stanley Cup (and I don't think this series is over, by a long shot), it might be good for him, by taking the glare of the limelight off him a little bit, I don't know how he stands it.

It's a marketing strategy. Stern over in the NBA has used that very successfully over the years with the likes of Shaq and Bettman is using a page out of his book (since he was his mentoring him). But, I agree, Crosby's oversensationalized...if that's a word. Much like how all that hollywood gossip/tabloid c**p is constantly being shoved into our faces.

Because Sid plays like he's from another planet.  I mean seriously, do you even watch hockey?

Comparing him to Vanek?  Puh-lease!  Last year without Briere or Drury, Vanek proved that without a good centerman, he's average at best.

And Sid is only going to get better.  He hasn't hit his prime yet.

Any hype is good for Hockey.  He was given the moniker, 'The Next One" because he is Canadian and reminds a lot of people of Gretzky and Lemeiux.  He is a star, plain and simple.  Just like Gretzky, he is the one most people speak about.  And he is d**n good.

And Vanek is no Crosby, LOL.

If you are comparing vanek to him, who is very good and Austria's future captain in international competition, you must be a VERY casual fan.  I get tired of it a bit, but he does deserve credit for his uncanny ability to find teammates and get them the puck.  Also has great strength, balance, and even shot, though he doesn't use it enough.  When gretzky started to shoot he scored 92 goals in a season, a record that will never be broken, yet when people think of gretz they don't think of the best shooter ever, just the best player.

Last night, Crosby showed he can find another gear. He scored the first two goals in the Penguins' win over the Red Wings.

He's not over-rated, maybe over-marketed. He was heralded as the league's savior 2 years ago and for an 18 year old, he handled it pretty well.

Gretzky is in a class by himself. As much as people tout Mario Lemieux, Gretzky's scoring, leadership and Stanley Cup wins outpace Mario, who was a great player.

As a Red Wings fan, I was disappointed we lost. But the two gritty goals by Crosby showed he wasn't ready to cave to the pressure just yet.

Because he is the "next one" and since he has become the face of the NHL, he is going to be talked about more than any other player.  It is unfortunate for die-hard hockey fans but hopefully he will make the sport popular again so that hockey will be broadcast on a wider scale.

there is a saying thats says, "the best players can play with anyone, they make everyone around them great", hence why Sid has all them assists. No matter who he plays with, his linies score goals. Not only that, he is a two way player, battles in the corners unlike a lot of goal scorers, mucks it up, is the captain of an up and coming team, lit up the Q, came right into the show without having to play in the minors like vanek and stepped right into a role as a huge threat to every other team. oh yea and he is only 20 and Canadian not Austrian (its canada's game aint it). Thats why all the hype. Sure Ovy can snipe, as well with malkin and vanek and a few other young stars, but they aint like crosb, they dont have that heart and a lot of them dont have that poise!!!

vanek had better linemates than crosby until this year (no he does not line with malkin). shifting with briere afinogenov and/or drury doesn't hurt cause i'll tell you one thing they ain't paying attention to you.

vanek is good, but nowhere near the level of a crosby

vanek was nowhere near as effective this year without briere and drury. crosby was good when he was carrying a weak PIT team sorry you are wrong. despite his rap as a flopper he is more often strong on the puck, has great vision, and by typing crosby into you tube you can see he has shown a will to win and not give up until the play is over.

nobody claims him to be Wayne the Great #2 anymore, i think that is a consensus. he is an elite player though, probably your #1 pick if you are starting a team. you can be more of a goalscoring center which is what malkin is (but we won't see how good malkin is until he gets off the second line, whenever he gets traded once the $$$$ is required to keep him). bottom line if he wanted to shoot and try for more goals he probably could get a lot more, but his role on the team is to get it in the net and score points, sometimes its a better chance to pass . . . he could be a puck hog if thats what you want.

Menu, while I agree with most of your answer about Crosby, I don't agree with Ovie not having the same "heart" for the game.  I've been watching hockey for a LONG time, and it's just fun to watch Ovie play (and I'm not a caps fan).  He plays with so much passion and he looks like a kid at Christmas when he scores a goal.  Just one reason why so many non-caps fans wanted the Caps in the playoffs, just to watch Ovie play.  Wish I could vote for the Hart, Ovie would have my vote for sure.

Crosby was leading the league in Goals and Assists I believe until his injury in January.

Let there be hype.  Hockey needs some hype.  If he was on a team you root for you'd adore him.

If you can't see why Crosby is better than Vanek (who is a fine young player in his own right) you've got to watch hockey more and understand what genuine hockey talent is.

From a Wings fan. I think Crosby showed very well last night what all the hype is about. I was glad to see the Pens come out and show what they are made of. Face it, you dont get to the SCF by playing the kind of hockey they did in games 1 and 2. Looks like its going to be a closer series than most of the Wings fans would like to have admitted, and I for one am glad. Patiently waiting for game 4.

The fact that you even compared the two players makes me think you're either 9 years old or have a serious learning disability.

Despite 29 extra games, Crosby outscored Vanek by 8 points.

Vanek 82games - 36 goals 28 assists 64 points (+-) -5

Crosby 53games - 24goals 48 assists 72 points (+-)18

Add in 17 playoff games, and Crosby is up to 95 points in 70 games. Gimme a break. What's the next comparison? are you gonna claim Maxim Afinogenov is a better goal scorer than Ovechkin?

I can see both sides of this issue.  There have been an entire group of rookies to come into the NHL and do amazing things, but it seems like Crosby is the only one getting credit for what he's doing.  As much as I hate to say it, Crosby's looks play a big part in that too.  Sorry, but speaking from a woman's perspective, Vanek is nowhere near as attractive as Crosby and because people (especially Americans) are superficial like that, Crosby gets more attention.  (This is coming from a die-hard Wings fan too.)

Crosby is a good player and he's only going to get more impressive as the years go by, however, I don't agree with the nickname that some people have given him.  I don't think he's going to be "The Next One".  He has a LOT of years to go before he's even close to being compared with someone like Gretzky.

Crosby's always going to have the hype and power!! Hes been handed down the torch of skills and power. First it was Gretzky then Lemeiux now Crosby. The only thing different then the other 2 is Crosby fights his own battles and is small in size compared to Lemeiux! Anyways I do have to say I'll cheer for him no matter where he ends up on meaning which teams... I also cheer for Ovechkin he always acts like his goals are always the first goal or 50th goal he puts excitement into his games, he does look to ape-ish though. Crosby is 3 times the player Vanek is, sorry to burst your bubble. Vanek's also older to so Crosby will break Vanek's records in a year, 2 years tops! I also remember Crosby getting first overall for points... hmm Vanek wasnt anywhere near him... if it wasn't for him getting hurt this year. Crosby wouldve done it again!
