  1. Yes, technically running a car on biodiesel is illegal because the fuel properties differ from the EPA standards for diesel, and vary from batch to batch. This law is (mostly?) unenforced though.

Home-brewers are more likely to be cited for violations of state and local regulations regarding chemical storage. There is a limit to the amount of fuel and methanol that can be stored at a residential property (methanol is reacted with oil to make biodiesel - it's also toxic and highly flammable) .

There may also be registration/licensing requirements in some areas, and I think producers can also get in trouble for ignoring fuel taxes.

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bio_fuel#Ve...

Bio fuel (also called agrofuel[1]) can be broadly defined as solid, liquid, or gas fuel consisting of, or derived from biomass. The definition used here is narrower: bio fuel is defined as liquid or gas transportation fuel derived from biomass. Biomass can also be used directly for heating or power: this is commonly called biomass fuel: see biomass heating systems. Bio fuel is considered a means of reducing[2] greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy security by providing an alternative to fossil fuels.

Bio fuels are used globally: bio fuel industries are expanding in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The most common use for bio fuels is in automotive transport (for example E10 fuel). Bio fuel can be produced from any carbon source that can be replenished rapidly e.g. plants. Many different plants and plant-derived materials are used for bio fuel manufacture.

  3. Gas or liquid fuel made from plant material (biomass). Includes wood, wood waste, wood liquors, peat, railroad ties, wood sludge, spent sulfite ...

    Its  not illegal

  4. Bio fuel is not illegal, well  its not here in Ireland its an enviromentally friendly alternative to diesel for use in cars vans etc

  5. It's not illegal, and if he's doing it right, it won't ruin the car.  Straight cooking oil isnt' an excellent fuel, normal bio-fuels based on cooking oil usually have various additives to improve their performance.  But, as long as he filters it well, so that no food particles clog the engine, it should be perfectly fine.

  6. Bio fuel -- easy sounding answer to hard questions

Every time you fill up with bio fuel you are raising the price of food.  Good choice?

  7. Bio fuel is legal. Bio diesel is the most common. There are actually chains of Biodiesel fueling stations across the country. Though they are still sparse in their locations.

You can also make your own Biodiesel at home. And yes, this is legal too as long as it's for your own personal use. to sell it, you would need to have a business license and meet other safety regulations.

The fuel itself is made from used cooking oil. You can make arrangements to buy this from local restaurants. Though many are just happy to give it away, free. So they don't have to pay a firm to haul it away. The exhaust fumes from Biodiesel run cars often smell like fried food. But the emmission they put out is actually steam. You do need to convert a car to use Biodiesel, however. The easiest ones to convert are the cars that use regular diesel fuel to start with. This is actually driving up the demand for used Mercedes cars. I was reading an article on this just last week.

You can buy kits to make Biodiesel from Real Goods. They also sell the kits to convert your diesel fuel car to Biodiesel. The Real Goods company, by the way... Specialises in alternative fuels, solar living supplies, composting toilets etc. They have over 30 years of being in this business. Also, they are a division of Gaiam Corporation. Gaiam is the company whose yoga supplies you see all over the place from small boutiques to Target.
