  1. blu-ray is a new type of high def dvd. it can hold alot more data than a standard dvd and a  hd dvd. and has a better picture. its used mainly for movies and ps3 games.

  2. Type of high deff media......=]

  3. Blu-Ray  is the next generation of movie media,. It looks like like a DVD, which it is meant to replace but stores 50 GB (at this time) per side compared to 9.4 of DVD. It uses a blue laser to read the information contained on the BD (The correct acronym for Blu-Ray Disc) which is much finer that the red laser used on DVD. BDs also have a tough scratch resistant coating making the discs more durable than DVD.

Up until recently, Blu-Ray was in competition with a rival format called HD DVD which was promoted by the same group that promoted DVD and was touted as the next generation of DVD. The "format war" was pretty even for awhile until Warner Studio (the only bi-affiliated studio left) chose to release movies exclusively on Blu-Ray.  This has tipped the balance irrevocably in Blu-Ray favor and has killed sales for HD DVD. The week after the Warner announcement Blu-Ray took 90% of the movie sales (This only happened on the 4th of January but pretty much everybody including the retailers who are very tired of the war have called it in favor of Blu-Ray)

    The advantages of Blu-Ray are-

1- Better Picture. Blu-Ray is capable of producing 1080P images compared to 480P from DVD. All Blu-Ray players can scale standard DVD to a higher resolution 1080i or P but require an HDMI cable to do so.

2 Better Sound. When connected correctly you can get an uncompressed track from movies which sounds awesome, provided you have the speakers to hear it with. Again, HDMI is required to access these uncompressed audio tracks to a receiver, meaning the receiver needs HDMI inputs unless the Blu-Ray player has the decoder for them built in and analog outs for it. Right now only 1 does.

3- More extras. The extra space on the BD allows for more extras.

4- Picture in picture commentary. The newer generation (profile 1.1) players allow you to access running commentary that opens up PIP style in it's own window. Everybody is complaining that the old players didn't have it but who cares. About 10% of people use the extras anyway.

5- Web enabled. The next generation players have been announced and panasonic is releasing a profile 2.0 player. When connected to the internet through a network this allows for 3 things. 1-Unlimited movie extras accessable through the internet.2- Games that can be played against others online. 3- automatic firmware updates.

The other players can be firmware updated but require that downloads burned to a blank DVD be loaded.

Blu-Ray players for the most part start at about $350 on sale and often come with a selection of 5 free movies. Funai is releasing 1 for $299 soon and as more 2nd and 3rd tier manufacturers start getting into the act expect them to be $150 by christmas.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Its one of those "High definition" kinda things. In other words something to make you go spend lots of money on blu ray players and discs for nothing!

  5. Blu-Ray is a brand of disc technology set to replace DVD.  It's fairly comparable rival format is HD-DVD.

In a nutshell, as far as movies go Blu-Ray discs can play them in full high definition (1080p), whereas regular DVDs can only do standard definition. The difference HD makes is not some gimmick or just a slightly sharper picture. You actually see more detail (blades of grass, bad makeup job on a news anchor, etc) and the overall clarity is much better. Also, HDTV is always in widescreen, like movies are when you see them in the theater, thus a Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) movie is more accurate to what you saw in theaters.

Blu-Ray (and HD-DVD) as a format, in general, holds alot more data then DVD and plays that data at a higher bitrate. That means better quality video/audio, more video/audio, or both can be put onto these discs.  Both disc formats also allow for more flexible and interactive content and menus. Blu-Ray is also the format used for Playstation 3 games.

Currently it seems Blu-Ray has the most support by major movie studios and more Blu-Ray movies come out then HD-DVD. It is also the format that can technical hold the most data and play it at a faster bitrate.  The couple points HD-DVD has on it's side is a combo format (half DVD half HD-DVD) and the distinction of technically being potentially more resistant to imparing damage.  Some people site picture quality differences between the two formats, although both discs are technically capable of producing nearly the same video quality, with only a slightly higher potential (higher bit-rate) in Blu-Ray.

And yes, it's called Blu-Ray because it uses a blue laser, instead of red/infrared like DVD.

  6. A type of High Definition media

  7. It's a rivaling data format to HDDVD. Pretty much it has a blue ray instead of an infrared one which means it is more pinpoint laser which means that less space has to be used to store the same data and so more data can be saved to it without being compressed so in general it can save more data for one bit of sound/video bit than a DVD or HDDVD that it can be like Super High Definition. The reason it can save more than HDDVD is because HDDVD uses the pinpoint idea but instead of BluRay it is infrared. For a way better, accurate idea of this go to wikipedia. They are actually right on this one.

  8. Next generation from DVD. High definition Picture Media.
