Whats up with engineering?

Why is everyone going after the engineering degrees? Is it about money? It seems like a fad that everyone is following and everybody is following each other.

I chose to become a Fire Protection Engineer in 2003.  The coolest part of this job is that I get to save lives and there are thousands more jobs then there are graduates to fill them...Our school has a 100% hire rate at or before graduation.  You can't say that about too many degree plans/schools.  And besides, its a cool job!

i intend to go for a mechanical engineering degree because i'm good at figuring out why stuff does or doesnt work, also it has a wide range of uses. i know someone with that degree and she has made medical equipment, parts for army tanks, and scrapbooking stuff.
