When all DVD's?

go to blueray do you have to buy a different player or will the player I have play blueray? I just bought a new upgrade player in january. I hate to have to buy another player plus double the price! thanks.

  1. If you remember, it took DVD over 5 years to start outselling VHS, and it's only been in the past few years that studios stopped selling movies on VHS altogether - over a decade after DVD first arrived.

    For blu-ray, you will need to buy a new player, however, if DVD/VHS is any indication, DVD will be around for at least another decade before it goes away - assuming it ever WILL go away.

    Also keep in mind that without a HDTV, blu-ray is absolutely pointless, so don't even worry about it until you've upgraded your TV to HDTV.  In the meantime, prices are expected to fall rather rapidly now that blu-ray has won the format war.  I would not be surprised to hear about $200 blu-ray players this Christmas.


  2. You'll have to buy a new one.  DVD players to not support Blu Ray format.  (Don't worry; I don't think DVDs will become obsolete for quite a while, and the cost of Blu Ray players will go down.)
