Are all brand new DVD movies factory sealed no matter how old it is? Or are just only the now (newer releases) factory sealed?

  1. Movies are factory sealed for the same reason shoes aren't laced up in the box when you buy them and batteries are hermetically sealed in plastic when we buy them.  Marketing research shows that we're willing to pay a premium for things that we're assured are new.  When Radio Shack tried to sell batteries in bulk, they sold poorly; when food is sold in bulk, we're usually willing to pay less.

The same goes for DVDs.  If we're sure something is new, we're willing to pay a premium because we associate it with better quality even though it's not something that's likely to wear out like batteries or shoes.

I'm sure p****y prevention plays some role in it, too, but it's mostly just marketing.
