Is it true you are suppose to tear a flap in the back of their throat that keeps them from drowning so they will let go?

  1. All crocodillians have a flap of muscle and skin at the back of the mouth that closes when the animal dives under water.  This allows them to open their jaws while submerged and not drown.  Theoretically what you say would possibly work, but actually managing such a feat would likely not be practical.  The best way to survive an alligator bite is to not get bitten.

Also, in reference to another answerer:  No, hitting an alligator on the nose won't do anything.  Supposedly it's sharks who will back off from a good punch in the nose.

  3. that sounds hard.  i heard of people hitting the nose or eyes and still surviving.
