  1. I guess a lot depends on what you mean by country.

    Also, I don't think we know enough about Taino society to say whether they could be regarded as a country before Columbus.

    Otherwise, I think that one could argue that the forerunner of the modern country of Cuba was the Spanish colony - and that was really created in 1511 when the first governor was appointed.

    Cuba remained a colony until 1898, when the Spanish were defeated - so that is really when it became a separate country (though it remained under US administration until 1902).

    You could also count from 1895, when the Cuban revolution against the Spanish restarted.


  2. Cuba declared independence from Spain on October 10, 1868...but was under their domain from1511. Then it was declared as a Republic on May 20, 1902  and the Cuban Revolution was January 1, 1959 with Fidel Castro taking over.
