Question:

When to breed a shepherd?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I know it depends on when they go into season - duh. But around what time of the year is it best to breed my German shepherd? Would it be better in the spring vs. fall or doesn't it matter? What would be best for the puppies?

And if your going to say something like 'don't breed her at all' then don't bother answering this question because I will be breeding her.

Thanks!

  1. It is better to breed when you will have pups ready to go in the early spring ,summer or early fall. This way it is a good time for new owners to  start training  and to housebreak them.Never breed to have pups for Chistmas time.

  2. Well since you are breeding her you should have a mentor and you should ask them. She needs to be 2 years old and you can do testing at this time so you produce HEALTHY pups. Ask your vet. Rember that she will need to go to regularly scheduled appointments throughout the pregncey and afterwards her puppies will need to go on a regular basis. And since you are breeding her you have a warm dry spot in your house set aside just for her. Rember that this will be her spot for over 4 mths. I highly advise you NOT to breed but obviously you have your mind set on killing shepherd puppies that already don't have homes so I will give you my advice. Go to your mentor and your vet.

  3. if you plan on breeding your dog, you need to make sure she is a proven champion, has had her hips and elbows certified, has been tested for health and genetic diseases, has been tested for std's such as brucellosis, is at least 2 years of age, and is registered with a reputable kennel club such as the akc.  otherwise you are nothing more than an irresponsible, unethical back yard breeder.

  4. We're not necessarily the best people to ask. But I'm sure your breeding mentor will have all the answers for you. What time of year does he/she breed his/her dog?

  5. One thing to consider is.. puppies should be born and raised in the house.  Shepherds have a lot of puppies.

You will be cleaning p**p constantly, and your house will stink of p**p 24/7.  No way around it, even if you clean up the puppy area every hour on the hour.

In the summer, you can open the doors and windows to freshen the air, and you can bring young puppies out for playtime in the warmer months.  But, if you are a person who travels a lot in the summer, then this is obviously not a good time to have puppies.

In the winter, your windows will be closed it, and it will be too cold for puppies to have outdoor playtime.

I won't go into the health testing, Championship, etc etc etc as as far as I am concerned that is a given expectation no matter who is doing the breeding.  ANY responsible breeder knows that, so I will assume you do plan to be responsible, have already done or have plans to do, the OFA, CERF, BAER, etc and the Championship.

  6. Get a breeding mentor and start learning about the breed before going solo and adding poorly bred animals to the world.

  7. i don't care people who breed there dog are MORONS. and should have there dog SPAYED

i saw you answered the question "is it ever to late to get your dog neutered" you said "no it is never to late" then why don't you fix your dogs like how you answered

  8. Shepherds are a large breed of dog and should not be bred until ideally at the age of 2yrs old when they are done growing. If you breed them before then you could easily stunt the dogs growth and even cause complications with the litter. Hope you are breeding for all the right reasons.
